How to negotiate an offer without making it awkward

A calm script for base, equity, and start date — grounded in market data and gratitude.

Negotiation isn’t confrontation. It’s clarifying mutual fit after they’ve decided they want you. Most candidates leave money on the table because they rush to accept.

Acknowledge, then ask for time

Thank them specifically. Confirm you’re excited. Ask for the full offer details in writing and a day or two to review. That pause alone improves outcomes.

Lead with priorities, not ultimatums

Share what would make the offer a clear yes — base range, equity, signing bonus, or start date — and why. Anchor with market data for your level and location when you have it.

Example: “I’m aligned on the role and team. To make this work long-term, I’d need base closer to $X given scope and market comps. Is there flexibility there?”

Trade, don’t demand

If base is rigid, explore equity, bonus, title, remote flexibility, or an earlier review cycle. Stay collaborative. You’re solving a shared problem: closing the loop.
