Prepare 6 STAR stories that cover almost every behavioral interview

A compact story bank for leadership, conflict, failure, impact, ambiguity, and collaboration.

Marcus Hale · Interview coaching

You can’t memorize answers to every behavioral question. You can prepare a small set of flexible stories and map them on the fly.

The six stories to have ready

1) Leadership without authority 2) Conflict with a peer or stakeholder 3) A failure and what changed 4) A measurable win 5) Ambiguity or incomplete requirements 6) Cross-functional collaboration.

Write each as Situation → Task → Action → Result. Keep results concrete. Practice the Action section longest — that’s where interviewers lean in.

Deliver like a conversation

Aim for 90–120 seconds per story. Pause for follow-ups. If they dig into tradeoffs or metrics, that’s a good sign — expand, don’t restart.

Rehearse against the role

Before each interview, pick the three stories that best match the job description. Practice aloud once. Confidence comes from selection, not from memorizing a script.
